The Lymph Drainage Therapy techniques I use was developed by Dr. Bruno Chikly, M.D., DO (hon). Dr. Chikly graduated from medical school at Saint Antoine Hospital in France. He has extensively researched the lymphatic system and lymph drainage techniques. In 1994 he earned the prestigious "Medal of the Medical Faculty of Paris VI" for his work.
Why is Lymph Drainage Important?
Proper functioning of the lymphatic system is crucial to our body's ability to detoxify, drain stagnant fluids, regenerate tissues, filter out toxins, and to maintain a healthy immune system. The lymph system is very complex, comprised of lymph vessels and lymph nodes working together to achieve the above.
Lymph is not pumped by the heart as the circulatory system is. The lymph vessels move lymph with hundreds of tiny muscular units (lymphangions) which contract throughout the body to propel the lymph. The lymph vessels transport various substances--proteins, toxins, hormones, fatty acids, immune cells--to the lymph nodes, which then process them.
Action of the muscular units can be stopped or impaired due to surgery, trauma, burns, infections, swelling, fatigue, stress, or age. When lymph flow is decreased or stopped, then cellular functioning is compromised as fluids, proteins, cells, and toxins accumulate.
Lymph Drainage Therapy helps to re-circulate body fluids, stimulated the immune system, and promotes relaxation and balance in the autonomic nervous system.
How is Lymph Drainage Therapy Performed?
The technique is a series of very gentle manual maneuvers to assist the flow of lymph throughout the body. Usually the pressure is no more than 5 grams of pressure (about the weight of a nickel), but for some areas of the body it is more. It is very relaxing and healthy. The rhythm, direction, depth, an quality of lymph flow are felt and treated as needed.
